Lessons from Working with Mark Zuckerberg 💡

When I first stepped into Facebook’s Palo Alto office, I wasn’t sure if I was in a startup or a frat house. Cables hung from the ceiling, and people rushed around. My first day kicked off with an unexpected meeting where Mark Zuckerberg, in true Zuckerberg fashion, welcomed me to Facebook with a candid message: “I just fired your boss, welcome to Facebook.”

Working at Facebook was both the best and the worst experience of my life. I was employee #30 and was let go nine months later. But the lessons I learned during that time were invaluable, helping me eventually build AppSumo into a $100 million company.

Here are the last 5 non-obvious lessons I picked up from working directly under Mark Zuckerberg: 🚀

6. Attention to Detail: Mark set a high bar for excellence, even down to the smallest details.

7. Empower the Team: Mark gave us the freedom to take ownership of our projects, fostering innovation.

8. Humanize Your Users: Mark insisted on seeing users as people, not just numbers.

9. Keep the Right People on the Bus: Mark was quick to remove anyone holding the company back, ensuring only the right people stayed on the team.

10. Have a Big Vision: Mark’s refusal to sell Facebook for $1 billion showed us his vision to connect the entire world, which motivated us all to give our best.
